This bag is named after Dr. Lyster, an Army surgeon who experimented with water purification techniques to bring safe drinking water to troops in the field and on the battlefront. He developed this bag (known as a Lister or Lyster bag) to hold 36 gals. of water treated with chlorine. Treated water kept in the Lister bag remained free of contaminants for 30 minutes. This gave GIs the opportunity to fill their canteens and avoid water-borne bacteria. Lister bags were used extensively during WWI and WWII. Non-returnable item.
