1) Where was the SKS invented?
A: The SKS rifle was invented in the former Soviet Union.

2) Who designed the SKS?
A: Russian firearms designer Sergei Simonov designed the SKS.

3) What year was the SKS accepted into service?
A: The SKS first entered service in the Soviet Army in 1945. It was phased out of frontline service in 1947 when it was replaced by the AK-47.

4) How many calibers can be found in SKS rifles?
A: The SKS has been produced in only one caliber, 7.62×39.

5) What is the magazine capacity of the SKS and can I get a larger capacity magazine?
A: The original magazine was a fixed, 10-round magazine that was loaded from the top with single rounds or stripper clips. The magazine floorplate was hinged to facilitate easy removal of the rounds. There are aftermarket magazines that hold 20 and 30 rounds. Some of these are fixed while others are removable. The quality and function of these mags vary greatly, so it is suggested to do some research before making a purchase. There was also a Chinese model SKS that was modified to accept AK-47 magazines.

6) My SKS fires 7.62 ammunition. Is this the same as .308?
A: The 308 Winchester cartridge is a 7.62mm round, but it is not the same as a 7.62×39. The .308 is a longer and more powerful round and its NATO designation is
7.62×51.

7) I want to replace the original stock on my SKS. What is available?
A: There are several companies producing replacement stocks for the SKS. Options include fixed stocks, side folders, telescoping buttstocks, a Dragunov style and even a bullpup conversion.

8) My Yugo SKS has an extension on the end of the barrel. What is this for?
A: The Yugo M59/66 is equipped with a grenade launcher on the end of the barrel. There is also a special grenade sight attached to the gas block.

9) Will all replacement stocks work on all SKS models?
A: Not all. The Albanian SKS has a longer stock and handguard that extends to the gas block. The Chinese SKS D model was modified to accept AK-47 detachable mags so the magazine cutout is different. Most of the other models, including the Yugo, will be compatible with replacement stocks.

10) Is the SKS defined as an assault rifle?
A: It really depends on where you live, but as a general rule, it is not defined as an assault rifle. The SKS lacks some of the features most commonly associated with the term “assault rifle”, such as a protruding pistol grip and detachable magazine.

11) How does the 922R compliance law pertain to the SKS?
A: If an owner of a SKS is going to convert his rifle into a “non-sporting” rifle (pistol grip, folding stock, etc.), he must use a certain number of U.S. made parts so the rifle will remain compliant with U.S. Code Title 18, 922.

  3. my yugo sks does not have a makers mark on it, in fact it has no emblems at all on it. and i bought it from a gun shop now i
cant sell it cause of that. ive been told that i have a black market gun so to say but i bought it legally. how do i fix this problem?

  4. yes you can hunt with the sks and here is a link that you might find of interest http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2277107/deer_hunting_with_the_762x39mm_russian.html?cat=11

  5. I have no idea who told you that. The gun is not a black market gun. The yugos don’t put emblems on thier rifles. If you look at the sn# you will see a letter in front of it. That tells you what year the gun was made. So, if you want to sell it you perfectly legal to do it. The person that told you that doen’t know what he is talking about. Because if it was black market the dealer would of never sold it to you. But go to http://www.yugosks.net and you can find just about everything you want to know about it.

  7. “My SKS fires 7.62 ammunition. Is this the same as .308?”

Correct answer is No. Not only is the 308 round longer than a 7.62×39 round but the 7.62×39 fires a .311 diameter bullet while a 308 or 7.62×51 NATO fires a .308 diameter bullet, the same as most US 30 caliber rounds.
You can reload and fire a .308 bullet in a 7.62×39 case but accuracy will suffer somewhat, also the cheap russian, chinese, etc. steel cased ammo is not reloadable, you must purchase brass cased commercial ammo or empty brass to be able to reload for 7.62×39, and proper .311 bullets are recommended.

  8. The SKS is a great rifle for plinking. They are also tough as nails. The only problem I ever had is using US or boxer primed ammunition. The SKS uses a floating or inertia firing pin. The pin floats in the bolt so when a round is fired, the pin carries some inertia when the bolt closes, striking the primer. On harder berdnan primers this isnt a problem, but on softer boxer primers, you can fire off 2 or 3 rounds in uncontrolled automatic fire.I’ve had it happen to me a few times on the range

  9. What’s a good price to pay for a Chinese Norinco SKS?

    Comment by MikeC — February 23, 2011 @ 2:49 pm

  10. With regard to “assault rifle”, it must be able to fire in full auto mode. The SKS is semi auto and thereby not subject to assault rifle classification.
Many suffer a condition known as slam fire, which leads to doubling or full auto. Very dangerous. Because it has a free floating firing pin which if not hospital clean, will stick and jam in the extended position. Field strip the rifle and examine the firing pin. If it’s protruding and will not move, DO NOT USE THE RIFLE until this is corrected.
Murrays Gunsmithing in Texas, sells a kit which includes a new stainless firing pin with a spring. The spring holds the firing back under tension, thus eliminating the danger of slam firing. At last check, the kit was 37$ or he will install and return the bolt ready to drop in for 47$. An excellent and worthwhile upgrade. Search You Tube for SKS slam fire and how to correct it. Ben Murray has a fine video to explain it.
With the mod in place you now own one fine battle rifle.

  26. Looking for an answer on this. Have owned a 1952 Russian sks for the last 10 years. Great gun. Cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. Have never had any issues until now. She has always loved the Wolf rounds, and have never shot anything else. Last week while shooting, the gun misfires on a round, and the bolt locks. The primer shows a hit, but the bolt continues to lock in place. Changed mags, and different ammo, same issue. Changed the firing pin out for a new Murray’s, same issue. Again, well maintained SKS. Thouhts ???

  28. According to law to be considered an assault rifle it must have 2 things. It must be a “centerfire rifle” with a “detachable magazine” and 1 or more “evil features” such as… 1.pistol grip
    2.flash hider
    3.bayonet lug
4.grenade launcher, etc. and the list goes on, but it MUST be a centerfire rifle and have a detachable magazine.

    Comment by Bigmag47 — November 20, 2012 @ 3:43 pm

  29. John Baily, you are WRONG! A rifle does not have to be fully auto to be considered an “assault weapon” You should not tell people this as they could get in serious trouble, AND lose their weapon! To be considered an assault rifle, it need only be a centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine and any one of the so called “evil features” You should KNOW what you`re talking about before blogging about it. you may get some UNINFORMED people (like yourself) in trouble!
